Can Google Flights beat Kayak at getting you the best #airline #flight #travel deals anywhere?! (Google is the engine behind both Kayak and Orbitz in case you didn’t know.) Possibly. Yes. And the additional tools they give you are pretty sweet, too. For example, tips on additional ways to save that pop up when you return a quote or seeing prices for your trip by rolling your mouse on every day of the month, with the cheapest days highlighted in green. (A bar graph at the bottom lets you know how prices will likely drop or rise over time, too.)
Even better: Use the “Save This Itinerary” button and the Google Now app can track the price. Use the app on your phone and Google will email you if the price drops dramatically!
So how do the travel sites stack up?
For example, we tested Google Flights on a round trip from Phoenix, AZ to Bangkok, Thailand on June 4 thru June 17. We were clearly alerted that if we returned on Thursday the 18, we could save an additional $89USD. The cost of the comparison flight RT? $1066. – With one layover in Narita, Japan.
Kayak’s site quoted us $1342 on a Delta flight thru SeaTac and Narita, and didn’t tip us off to any additional savings by tweaking our schedule a bit.
Cheapoair.com quoted us $1290USD on ChinaAir (using flexible date) and didn’t quote us on the Delta flight.
Priceline.com quoted us a pretty decent “Best available” at $1106USD using Delta Airlines, thru Minneapolis with two stops, or $1123. for the same flight found by Google Flights and Kayak.com
Expedia.com found us a Delta flight through Salt Lake City for $1115.38USD (3 stops) or the same Delta flight through Minneapolis for $1115.38USD (2 stops)
So according to our little impromptu test, Google flights beat the best on both overall lowest quote and tips on additional ways to save even more.
There is also the option to use Google flights for hotels, but I didn’t test it.
